Majik Quilt

February is winding down. The weather has been a roller coaster of cold, snow, some rain and some glorious sunny days!
The Horror story quilt is in the reworking process. A bit difficult since the quilt room is now the bed room of a 14 year old boy. One daughter and her son have moved in with us for a while, which makes space a premium and puts quilting on a back burner.
At least material is in hand and slowly moving along.
I have been doing more crocheting and knitting, since those crafts can be done in the living room and at the kitchen table.
For now that is how it is, daughter and grandboy are purchasing a trailer to move next door to us. It will be a few weeks yet and then I will be back in my 'office', with the sewing machines running.

Facing the fact that this blog is long overdue for updating, I made a resolution to work on it at least once a week this year.
Now for my SAD SAD story. the last quilt I made in 2009, for a friends son turned into a disaster. After weeks of work, it looked great.
Friend washed it before gifting to her son, and several seams came apart! It was a tied quilt and I have it back, trying to repair the damage. One of the fabrics she chose for the quilt has raveled out badly. I am afraid that it will require re-making, rather than 'fixing'. Not a happy thought.
Note to self: It doesn't matter how much you paid for the fabric, if it is not quality made, it will not do the job!

Dancing log cabin - my 2-step variation

I found the idea for this block on the net, through a group I belong to. It was one of those "I just have to make one to see it " kind of blocks. The original block was a bit different so I call mine the 2-step.

Using up some scraps, I made 4 blocks for a medallion center for a small quilt. This would be the 'beaches and boats' 2-step.

I think I will machine embroider some seashells around the border to help carry out the nautical theme of the blocks.

A few moments of fame

I entered a block in the 'I'm Dreaming of a Quilt ' contest, sponsored by Quilt in a Day (among others).
It was on the net for a few days before the judges narrowed the blocks to the final twelve that will be the winners.
Have to admit I was pretty proud just to get that far!

Adam's quilt

The star quilt for Adam's wife is back from the Quilter's.
It really looks nice, now it is ready for binding. I was gifted with some star blocks that his great grandmother had pieced and want to hand applique them on the back. I will have to get busy, so it will be done by Feb. 18.

New year challenge

Our guild received a challenge from the local Relay for Life to make blocks for a Survivor quilt to be given at the Relay event this year.
Needless to say, this was met with a great deal of enthusiasm. Not only guild members, but friendsand family expressed interest in participating in this project. It should be easy to get enough for more than one quilt. Maybe there will even be enough for a raffle quilt for this good cause.
Now the challenge is to find the 'perfect' block and get it done.
I hope to have some pictures to put up soon of these blocks as they are constructed and the finished quilt(s).

winter weather

Freezing rain and snow on top! What a lovely day! I am enjoying staying inside and catching up some on the blog. The picture is from last years ice storm, but it looks pretty much the same today. I haven't gotten out to take any yet.

Comfort food, homemade soup, and chocolate chip cookies seemed like a good idea to fill in time, between finishing up the apple quilt, binding a baby quilt, doing some embriodery for Heather and working on a crochet project too. Nice and warm and get good warm fuzzies, feeling like I am accomplishing something too.

DD2 called from San Diego to say she had finished her quilt top today too. Can't wait to see it!

My turn to do the BOM for our guild. Our meeting was cancelled because of weather, but I posted the instructions on our guild site.

The purple, green and yellow one it the actual BOM.

I REALLY liked the block andhad a fat eighth of a fabric that just said I needed to do something with it so. . . . of course, I got utterly carried away, made the pattern smaller and now have 5 that I amde with the fat eighth in them and 5 more that sort of co-ordinate.

Now, I have to figure out what to do with them.

The apple quilt is set! Thanks to all of you who helped make the blocks! I am VERY pleased with the outcome.

-The border was a challenge, I was about out of the apple print and the red dots, Walmart didn't have anymore of the dots either. When I finished it up I had just a handfull of scraps.

Anyway it is done now and can sit in the shelves until I can get around to getting it to the quilters. I have a chance to make a trade for some work for a small hand quilting frame. . . maybe I will get real carried away and quilt it myself.

Christmas Thoughts

This is the quilt for grand daughter for Christmas. She is the only grandchild I hadn't made a Christmas quilt for. Just got it back from quilter this week and will work on binding it today.

The 'rest' of Christmas this year is mainly 'gifts in a jar', copies ofthe family cookbook we made and little things for the rest of the grands and greats.

This year things got slowed down a bit - I volunteered to make reindeer costumes for the preschool class, and do embroidery name tags for gloves and hats for them. It was a lot of fun! My neice, Heather, who did not sew is the mom of one of the students. She helped cut, sew and them do embroidery. Now she wants a sewing machine too.

Seems the habit just keeps growing, doesn't it?

Quilting tools, sort of. . .

I was thinking about some of my quilting 'tools'. Well, to help keep my tools together at least.
I have a nice fishing tackle box that I use for thread, tape measure, pins, rotary cutter, pencil, etc. My DH, who loves to fish thought maybe I was going to take up fishing with him when I picked it out. Sorry dear!
I have a model car box (like for storing Hot Wheels) that houses my embroidery machine thread collection
A hook on the wall is handy for the hoop I use when hand quilting and I have a Liquid Tide Detergent lid with a lid on it that holds a spool of thread, needles, extra pins and folding scissors to take along when I am working on a hand quiltihng project.
I recently purchased a new cutting mat, and in the tradition of quilters, passed along the old one, an assortment of 'extras' and some fabric that I owned to my DD3 for her adventures in quilting.
In that same tradition, a friend of mine was gifted with a sewing machine and passed one of hers on to this same DD. Now she is set up to begin work on her own!
Quilters are special people, willing to share and pass along their expertise, knowledge, equipment, and friendship.

It isn't only quilting

These are two of the grand boys, DD#3's oldest 2, wearing their Indian costumes.
We made them for Halloween.
The boys had different ideas but when they saw the Indian costume I had made a couple of years ago for another grand boy, that was the choice.
We made them last night and today. The boys seem to be pretty pleased with the results. The little one looks ready to spring into a dance in the picture
I managed to use up quite a bit of 'scrappage', and we made matching 'treat bags' to go with them.

It was a busy day!

More musings

It occurred to me this morning that I do not have enough time! NO! I have too many things I want to do!

I have been working on a 'Lonestar' top for my nephew to give his wife, a mystery quilt that our guild is doing, trying to improve my 'stained glass' technique, and trying to get all the 'apple ' blocks that the family group made together so I can make that quilt for myself.

This morning I was able to finish the star, now have to get it set and bordered, then to the quilters, along with 2 other tops that are done but need to be quilted so they too can be finished.

At quilt guild we swapped out some blocks, and strips of fabric to add some spice to the mystery. I have never done a mystery quilt before, and am having a good time following the clues and trying to figure it out.

I have 2 hand quilted wall hangings on display at an exhibit in a nearby town. It is the second annual Quilting in the Ozarks display at the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resoure Center in Salem, MO.

Our guild meeting was held there this month so we got to see the quilts hanging before the actual display opened on Oct. 9.

There are certainly some very talented quiltmakers in our area and beautiful work, both modern and heirlooms in the exhibit.

The family recently exhibited some of their work at another show and came home with 5 firsts in 5 differeent categories.

Each one has her own favorite method or technique and all are certainly very talented!

They are very talented women and I am proud to be their friend, colleague and customer.

A co-worker, Carla, hand embroidered the blocks with wizards and dragons for her son.

Labor Day Weekend with the 'Quilting Family'

Labor Day weekend activities included a wonderful visit with family from Oklahoma, among them two neices who also quilt.
The quilting nieces and I got together in the sewing room at different times over the weekend and 'played'. One of them wanted to learn to make the 'lone star', so we went through the stash cabinet and picked out fabric, cut, pieced and made one point of the star. Of course, I sent the rest of the fabric home with her so she can work on the 'practice piece', before starting her final project.
The other neice wanted to play with the embroidery machine. She made a small picture for a family friend, then embroidered her grandsons names on fabric to use in a project that she is planning after she goes home.
We made a trip to the home of the family who does long arm quilting for me, to see their work. They had several quilts that will be in a local quilt show for us to look at. It is always a treat to go there! There are 5 quilters in that family, and they do lovely work with patchwork and machine embroidery besides their business of long arm quilting.
DD3 came Monday evening and worked on her 'patriotic block' for the guild meeting.

One more daughter, one more quilter.
DD3, Danielle just made her first pieced top. A crib size for her 7 month old daughter.
She started piecing it from my stash on Saturday Aug 11, and showed it at quilt guild on Aug. 13. Now she is trying to decide on the backing and finishing techniques she wants to use.
She has started her own quilting blog, there 's a link on this page.
Danni is a mother of 4, 3 boys and baby girl, so stays very busy.
I am glad she is finding time to quilt and hope she enjoys it as much as I do.

These two bordered panel quilts belong to grandson Randy.

The Indian panel was for his 16th birthday. It stays on his bed!

The wolves panel is his 18th birthday gift by request.

Randy is color-blind, but went shopping with me to pick out the co-ordinates for this quilt. It is a queen/king size and will

be a keepsake for him and his future family. (At least I hope)

More inspiration - another daughter takes up quilting

This quilt was made for DD1, Chrysta. It graces the back of her couch.

She helped pick out the fabrics and I made it at a class at Melear's, taught by Emma Troyer, using Eleanor Burns 'Log Cabin in a Day' book in 2006.

It was machine quilted with a leaf pattern that goes well with the 'forest' motif of the fabrics.

Chrysta works full time and home schools her 2 sons, so has limited spare time and just recently has taken up quilt making.

About a month ago she got a sewing machine and her 'starter' supplies for quiltmaking.

She and son Brett are working on a bargello pattern top.

Hand Piecing - practice in patience

Mother's star throw

It took most of the summer of 2006 to make 9 of these star blocks. I had decided to hand piece these blocks.

I took them with me on camping trips and stitched away while DH fished.

My hand sewing skills were pretty rusty when I started and some of the blocks were pretty skewed by the time I had redone them once or twice.

After some practice, however, the blocks began to look better. At first, it was frustrating, but after a while as I got more proficient, I began to relax and enjoy what I was doing.

I used the best 5 to make this throw for my mother. The lilac floral fabric made me think of her while I was working on the blocks.

It also has a folded bias border and is free hand machine quilted.

Inspiration - three generations of quilters

November 2006, during our DD2's annual family visit from San Diego, California, DD2 and I paid a visit to the local quilt shop for fabric.

Daughter picked out fabric she liked for a quilt, since I haad not yet made one for her and her husband. She liked both the log cabin and double Irish chain patterns, so it was decided that we would make lap size quilts for her home.

Both daughter and grand daughter got in on the planning, cutting and sewing of the log cabin blocks before their visit ended. The girls took back a list of beginning "I want to learn to quilt' supplies, purchased a sewing machine and have begun quilt making on their own!

The two of them have taken a class at Quilt in a Day as well. Both are currently working on finishing their quilt projects from that class. (see more information by clicking the TJ's quilting adventure link on this blog)

They have recently visited again, and I helped Granddaughter (age 15) with learning to quilt her project on the sewing machine.

Daughter used the embroidery machine to personalize the one she is now making for her husband.

Both attended quilt guild with me and Granddaughter showed her project at 'sew and tell'

It is a joy and pleasure to share this hob-ssession with them.

Grandson Brett - dinosaur fan and quilter in his own right

Brett loves dinosaurs, we found the big panel, a fabric book, and coordinating fabric that he really liked.

I used those to make the large quilt for him.

Brett has a mild form of autism and is home schooled. As a part of his home school program, Brett (then age 9) chose to make a small quilt.

He used the scraps left over from his quilt. I cut his blocks for him, but he did all the sewing, sandwiched the quilt and tied it.

We entered his quilt in our local county fair. He won a blue ribbon.

I also sent a picture of it in to my internet quilt group and Brett's quilt was chosen "quilt of the month".

Shortly after that, I took him to a local quilt show, he told the sponsors about his quilt and that he was "a world famous quilter". Who knows, maybe Ricky Timms is going to have some serious competietion in the future?

Since then Brett has made a rail fence baby quilt and is now working with his mom on a bargello pattern.

Musing on the quilt guild meeting

Is it Autumn or Christmas??????

Monday was quilt guild meeting. Our family was well represented, me, 2 daughters, granddaughter and a nephew in attendance. Also have another daughter and a grandson who quilt, but were not there.

I am proud of my 'quilting family'! They are very talented and creative.

Our new BOM is one we all really liked and the colors are "autumn". We bought fabric after the meeting and cut out block "kits" for 6 blocks, all alike! After we got started, we thought maybe the colors were more Christmas-y than autumn, but the apple theme is autumnal, so we will use them anyway.

I liked it so well that I already made more blocks with the same pattern and colors - just in case I don't win the blocks at the meeting LOL! I wonder what the reaction will be when they get 6 identically patterend blocks in the mix?? Oh well, it's what we wanted to do, and we did it. I may make a couple more in more traditional autumn fabrics, just for fun, and to add to the drawing. Someone may as well get a lot of blocks!

We were supposed to also make one block in patriotic colors for our Quilts of Valor project, so I made one of them using only 3 fabrics instead of 4. I was pretty impressed with the result of that too. I am going to share what I used for the focus fabric in the patriotic block with those in the family who want to make a patriotic block too.

At the guild meeting I was invited by one of our guests to her hand quilting group. I am excited about that, and hope to be able to attend.

This pattern is called 'improved nine patch'. A lady in one of the nursing homes I worked at, had made one and I was very impressed with the design.

I did not make this one completely, it was partially finished and it is vintage fabric. When I came upon it, I could not resist. I did finish it, and learned a lot about doing curved seams. It is small, about 45 inches square, so will be a lap robe to snuggle under when DH turns the air conditioning up too cool to suit me, and this fall when it's too warm for heat and too cool for comfort. I plan to hand quilt it.

Just some thoughts

I finished another 'Wolf' panel quilt today.
I got out the 5 tops that hadn't been documented with pictures and took photos of them, then went to work on my quilt journal.
The journal contains pictures, fabric swatches, and a few notes on the quilt. There are, of course, duplicates of several patterns, I have made several of the bordered panels, each different, several log cabins, in different sizes and settings. More than one Irish Chain or variation thereof.
I have quite a collection of books and equipment, rulers, mats, cutters, pins, needles, threads, and 2 sewing machines. Not to mention FABRIC, if I love it, I buy a yard or two, you never know when you might want to use it and for some reason the designs are only out for a while and then disappear. And of course there is the large trash bag of scraps, small pieces that are enough to use for something.
I have hand cut, rotary cut, paper pieced, chain pieced, hand pieced, and used about every other technique I have read about. I can draft my own patterns and settings on graph paper and I am learning to use EQ and an embroidery machine.
The finishing ranges from tying, to hand quilting, to a few on my home machine and those I have sent out to machine quilters. I can do a 'quick turn' finish or put on commercial binding or make my own, and if all else fails, yes, I can turn over the back and just hem the quilt.
There are 36 quilts in the journal, and 3 others that never got photos taken. From the early days, when I did not realize that this hob-ssession of mine was really an inroad in a time honored craft. There are also a few other undocumented projects, some 'quillows' and quilted pillows that I have done too.
Long ago, my best friend and I would spend time with her grand mother, who hand quilted for herself and others, Grandma Essie would try to get us to learn to piece and quilt. I don't know how many times she would get us started with a simple block, like a nine patch or snowball. We might stick with it long enough to complete a block. I don't remember completeing more than those 2 patterens and I am sure it was only one block of each. How sorry I am now that I did not pay more attention to that gifted craftwoman.
I used to sew, made most of the dd's school clothes for many years, a homecoming candidate dress, and youngest dd's wedding dress. Made western shirts and bib overalls. Now I hardly ever even sew up a rip or patch 'leaky' jeans. I would rather cut the fabric up and make a quilt!

Now hanging on the 'Design Curtain'

This is my 'storm at sea' wall hanging.

I found that paper piecing the blocks worked better than trying to cut and sew the pieces.

It is another venture in hand quilting. My stitches are getting more uniform and smaller, so improving.

This pattern intrigues me, with its feeling of motion, and the optical illusion of curves in the block.

The colors are still another attempt to use up the trash bag of scraps that I have collected.

The problem is: now I want a larger quilt in this pattern and these colors. One of these days I will get around to it!

UNICORNS on top and Dolphins on the back

A friend of ours wanted a special quilt for his wife for her birthday. She was also recovering from surgery. He specified that she liked unicorns, dolphins, and green and blue.

I used EQ to work on a layout and block size.

I had couple of yards of fabric with unicorns in the stash, so fussy cut some blocks from it. Made a trip to the quilt shops and of course there is no more of that fabric in the area, so opted to make some blocks with unicorn heads embroidered on them.

I finished the top and with only a couple of days to spare before the birthday, pieced a back for it with dolphin and tropical fish fabrics.

It really met all of his specifics!

This is a 'quick turn' quilt and it is tied, rather than quilted.

Using the quick turn technique also eliminated having to make binding for the finish.

As anyone who has seen this blog can tell, I am a fan of Eleanor Burns. The picture is when I got to meet her in Paducah, 2006.
I have 16 of her books and have made something from most of them! So many quilts, so little time!
I have other books too, but just like her easy methods and the great looking projects.
I recommend them to anyone beginning to quilt and even to seasoned quilters, because the instructions are easy to follow and there are many ideas to work from.
There you have it, my future goal - to be a pattern tester for Quilt in a Day!

Fat Quarter Quick Trip

Yes, it's another Eleanor Burns top! I won our guilds fat quarters for May 2007.
DD, beginner quilter, suggested that I make a top from the book she was using for her first quilt, Quick Trip Quilts.
She helped me pick the quarters to use and this is the result.

Design wall? OK it's my design curtain. I tend to hang blocks and small sections of quilt tops here to see what I have going on. The big block is a design for a friend who wanted a "deer quilt". It is from Eleanor Burns book Quilts through the Seasons. The "Pink Lemonade" block. :)
I liked the block pattern and these fabrics give it a whole different feel.

Winter Wolves

This is Granddaughters quilt. I had already made the top and she and her mother called from NH to tell me she had found the wolf panel at a fabric shop. She wanted a wolf quilt. I told her I would trade the quilt for the panel!

I have made two more on the same idea, one for grandson's eighteenth birthday coming up and one for a friend I worked with.

The wolves seem to be pretty popular!

butterfly sampler

A sampler is a combination of blocks in a quilt.
The main blocks in this one were from a Block of the month kit from Joann's Fabric.
I used small twin sisters blocks and a coordinating butterfly print for sashing and borders to make this lap quilt.
It was machine quilted with the 'stitch in the ditch' technique. I quilted around some of the butterflys in the sashing and border to add texture and show off the great print.

Star in the midnight sky

This began as a 'stash buster', it was supposed to be a wall hanging!

I had always heard that making the the star proved that you were a 'real quilter', and I had a lot of scraps from other projects I wanted to use up.

I thought it would be a good project for a few weeks of nasty cold winter weather, and it was!

The center medallion star and first border was the original plan, it took some patience to get the star just right.

My husband liked it, and it required a trip to the fabric store and piecing the smaller quarter stars to make it big enough for the bed.

Since my husband liked it so well and added his suggestions to the finishing, I gave it to him for his birthday.

Assymetric panel quilt

This quilt was made with a purchased panel and co-ordinating pillow tops.
Placement of the large blocks was a challenge, to get a good balance and meet the size requirements.
Note the coordinating backing.
The owner of this quilt was very pleased with the results.

Jackson's dogs

This quilt was made for a small boy. Photos of the family's dogs were printed on fabric and used for some of the blocks.
Many communications were necessary as this quilt was designed, to make sure it was exactly what the owner wanted.

It is a keepsake that will last for a long time.

Buffalo Calf Woman

This quilt was made for a friend with Native American Heritage. Machine embroidery buffalo in white and natural coloring, a fabric print of "White Buffalo Calf Woman" and a Native American look print make this a one of a kind quilt.

While making this one, I learned to download and edit embroidery patterns from the internet and how to manipulate them on the embroidery machine.

It is machine quilted with a southwest design, in keeping with the theme.

This quilt was made for a special lady. She loves pansies and I did a stained glass applique with machine embroidery in the alternate blocks on the throw. I used a folded border on and a pieced border to finish it.

This was my first adventure in hand quilting, and this is another Eleanor Burns Quilt in a Day pattern that I felt I really had to make.

I was trying to use up 'stash' fabric and this purple reminded me of my daughter who loves anything purple. It's real name is "Thinking of TJ".

I found the hand quilting to be a lot of fun and will be doing more of it in the future.

T L 's Irish Wilderness quilt

This queen size quilt was my husband's 40th anniversary gift. He loves fishing and hunting and the focus fabric in the blocks screamed his name to me when I first saw it.
The pieces were hand cut using scissors (another early attempt at quilt making) by our daughters, making this truly a 'family project'.
The blocks didn't always match up, but I felt the thought was what counted in this case.
I used a varition of Irish Chain in the setting which gives this quilt its name.

This quilt was the beginning! I made it for my granddaughter. I really had no idea how to do it, cutting pieces one at a time with scissors and sewing them together. I found a pattern on the internet and just went from there.
This one is tied rather than quilted.
I had always liked the Irish Chain pattern, and have made several more and variations on it since.
I have learned how to use many techniques to simplify cutting, piecing, construction and even learned to quilt on the machine and by hand since I made this one, however, this Irish Chain proved that I could make a quilt using the time honored traditional techniques.

Delectable Mountains top completed 2007

I saw the book for this quilt at Paducah KY, when I went to the Quilt show there in 2006. I fell in love with the pattern! so purchased the book. Quilt in a Day Delectable Mountains by Eleanor Burns. I added my own blocks for the corners.

I chose the pinks because often, these are the colors of the clouds as the sun rises over my Ozark Mountains .

The quilt turned out beautifully, and will provide a lot of comfort and pleasure to the owner.
